I designed the Sanctuary City logo for the San Francisco International Arts Festival (SFIAF) in 2017. The festival had an existing logo showing the San Francisco skyline, but in the aftermath of the 2016 election they were looking for an update.

I used a sunrise view of fog blanketing the bay and the Golden Gate bridge as an image suggesting tentative hope and the possibility of safety in the midst of confusion. The circular layout communicated completeness and protection of what's inside its boundaries.

The font I chose is Optima, a humanist sans-serif designed by Hermann Zapf in the proportions of the golden ratio. This font is versatile and pairs well with a wide range of typefaces.
